What is the church of Christ?

The church of Christ is the church you read about in the New Testament, built by Jesus Himself.  (Matt. 16:18).

It was established on the Day of Pentecost and God adds the saved to it. (Acts 2:47)

It is not a denomination with man-made creed books or doctrines.  We use the Bible, which is the inspired word of God, as our final authority on all matters. That word is the seed (Luke 8:11) and wherever it is sown it produces Christians only and the only Christians.

Following the plan of organization found in the New Testament, churches of Christ are autonomous, (self-governing).

Our common faith in the Bible and adherence to its teaching are the chief ties which bind us together.

There is no central headquarters of the church and no organization superior to the elders of each local congregation.

In each congregation, which has existed long enough to become fully organized, there is a plurality of elders who serve as the governing body. These men are selected by the local congregation on the basis of qualifications set down in the scriptures

(I Tim. 3:1-7, Titus 1:5-9).  Serving under the elders are deacons (Acts 6:1-6, I Tim. 3:8-13), teachers, and evangelists (II Tim. 4:5).

The latter do not have authority equal to or superior to the elders. The elders are shepherds or overseers who serve under the headship of Christ according to the New Testament.      There is no earthly authority superior to the elders of the local church.
